20th Anniversary Banquet

The concept was exciting: Porsches On The Ohio! Our Twentieth Anniversary Banquet would be held Saturday, June 8th on the Tropicana Evansville's large plaza overlooking the Ohio River and surrounded by as many of our members' cars as possible. JW and Martha Dollahan's beautiful 356 would serve as a centerpiece. D-Patrick Porsche would have some great cars on display. There would be two live bands, a cash bar, a serving tent for the banquet, and excellent raffle prizes. Members, sponsors, and guests would dine and dance in this perfect setting.

Friday's gloomy weather forecast forced us to choose Plan B, the indoor option. By four o'clock Saturday afternoon, heavy rain drenched the Tropicana's event plaza. Dale Fatland braved a downpour to help several people park their Porsches on the plaza. Despite the rain, everyone's spirits remained high. We were here to celebrate a major milestone!

Members, guests and event sponsors checked in at SIR Reception and were given their table assignments before entering the ballroom.

A cash bar opened at 5:00 PM and would remain open throughout the evening. People mingled happily, the rain outside either ignored or forgotten.

The talented "Foundry Big Band" provided spirited music to start the festivities. SIR members Mark Roethemeier and Kelly Dora joined them briefly.

The evening's Master of Ceremonies Scott Klueh invited Manuel Ramirez to ask a blessing for our dinner and Dee Dee Ramirez to lead us in reciting the Pledge of Allegience. We then took turns going to the generous buffet that had been set up in a nearby room.

The Tropicana Hotel provided excellent food and service, making our event run very smoothly.

After-dinner speakers included (L-R): Past-President Scott Klueh, President Phil Green, D-Patrick General Manager Tony Ricketts, Events Chair and Membership Chair Mark Roethemeier, PCA Nominating Committee Chair and former Region 13 Zone Representative Ken Hold.

Scott introduced Phil. Phil welcomed everyone and introduced Tony Ricketts. Tony introduced people at the D-Patrick table and then talked about the special relationship with SIR and the exciting times ahead for Porsche. Mark introduced his long-time friend Ken Hold, who was instrumental in reinvigorating SIR almost ten years ago.
Ken spoke of his history with our club and of his pet project, the Keenland Concours d'Elegance and its raffle to support the Kentucky Children's Hospital.

A fifteen-minute video by Jerry and Susan Jindrich followed the speakers. It began with "an incomplete guide" to the sports and racing cars that built the Porsche heritage, reviewed many of the best photographs shot on our drives in recent years, noted our favorite destinations, and covered tech sessions, social events, special events, and First Saturday gatherings. The show concluded with photos of almost all of our current members.

For our 20th Anniversary Sponsors and Guests, the program defined the activities and character of SIR. For members, it served as a reminder that despite the small size of our region, we try to operate with high levels of competence and style.

After the video, Club Treasurer Criss Yelton drew names from a bag held by Vice-President Bob Myers to announce raffle winners. Many great prizes were given out, ranging from tires to beauty treatments to SIR Logo wall clocks.

To conclude the evening, a second band called "Skelton's Montourage" set up and played some very sweet jazz for our listening and dancing pleasure.

Earlier in the evening, Michele Dora composed this memorable image of a banquet program, her SIR name tag, an etched SIR 20th Anniversary Banquet wine glass, and one of the beautiful floral arrangements that graced each table.

Despite the unfortunate weather and the necessary move indoors, our evening was a success. The Southern Indiana Region of Porsche Club of America may be a small region but it has grown in size dramatically in the past few years. Member participation and enthusiasm are very high. This was a fitting celebration and a hint of good things to come.
