Kentucky Derby Party

May 7th was a warm, sunny Saturday, perfect for the running of the 142nd Kentucky Derby and for our May social event hosted by Judy Ridings and Dale Fatland.

Fittingly, everyone brought plenty of horsepower, tasty treats, and colorful Derby hats.

The mood was especially festive. Maybe because of the hats.

The ladies were very stylish.

We happily welcomed Pamela Simpson, whom we had missed since Bob passed away last year.

The hats and the ladies who wore them: (standing, from left) Melinda Myers, Sarah Dauer, Rosie Stroud, Linda Barth, Debbie Jackson, Cheryl Roethemeier, and Judy Ridings. In front of Cheryl: Susan Jindrich. Crouched in front: Dawn Green, Macie Yelton, and Pamela Simpson.

As race time approached, Scott invited people to chip in to a pool and then had participants draw horses' names.

Post time at Churchill Downs was announced by the traditional bugler, who was followed by the crowd singing My Old Kentucky Home. No, we didn't sing along.

We did focus our attention on the TV, feeling a slight flutter of anticipation that our horse might win.

Riders Up!

Which horse do you have?

They're off!

Compared the cheering 167,000 fans in Louisville, we were pretty quiet, but it was a decent horse race.

The tension built as they raced around the final turn and into the home stretch.

Looks like a close finish!

Who's it going to be?

Nyquist crosses the line with Exaggerator unable to catch him at the end!

Pool winners were Sarah Dauer, whose horses came in first and third, and Pamela Simpson, whose horse finished second.

Gary Stroud won a few dollars on a $2.00 Lotto ticket on the winning horse.

Next it was time to announce the winner of the hat contest.

Debbie Jackson earned the most votes with this flowery creation that included a colorful arrangement of...

... miniature Porsches! Of course she would win.

Many thanks to host and hostess Dale Fatland and Judy Ridings for a festive and very pleasant afternoon!
